Paloma Cocktail

The Paloma is such a fun cocktail. We love grapefruit and we love tequila, so the flavors in this cocktail are a match made in heaven. We also learned recently that Aperol and tequila can be friends. Aperol is one of our favorite liqueurs for cocktails, and we love how a splash of Aperol gives this cocktail a pop of color and a touch more complexity than basic grapefruit soda. This version of the cocktail is definitely a little unconventional, but trust us–you’ll love it.

For our Paloma, we used El Jimador blanco tequila. It’s made by Herradura, which is our favorite, but El Jimador is more economical and great for mixed drinks where you don’t taste all the complexities of the tequila. Think of it like a “second wine” of a renowned producer. For the grapefruit soda (a requirement for a Paloma!) we used San Pellegrino Pompelmo soda. The splash of Aperol also gives it an Italian twist. The final ingredient is fresh squeezed lime juice.

Making the cocktail couldn’t be simpler. Just add your lime juice, tequila, and Aperol to a tumbler filled with ice, and top it off with the grapefruit soda. A lime wheel is the perfect garnish.

Last time we made these was a holiday weekend, so we brought out some fun glassware that we don’t use on a daily basis. We got these crystal tumblers years ago. We love them, and they are designed by one of our favorite Italian designers, but the silver dots on the outside are actual silver, so keeping them sparkly is a chore! For a similar look, we love  these. We’ve been eying them at Barney’s for months. We also love these and these. For a final touch, we added another pop of color with these paper straws. If your straws are too long, just trim them to fix the size of your glass.
